What You've Learned

  • Software Instrument loops can be converted to Real Instrument loops in the Timeline by adding them to a Real Instrument track.

  • You can also convert all Software Instrument loops to Real Instrument loops as you add them to the Timeline by changing the "Convert to Real Instrument" setting in GarageBand's Advanced Preferences window.

  • Imported audio files appear as orange Real Instrument regions in the Timeline.

  • You can only shorten a Software Instrument loop from the lower-right edge of the loop region. You can't shorten a Software Instrument loop from the left edge.

  • You can split a region at the playhead position by selecting the region and pressing Cmd-T.

  • Looping a region by click-dragging the upper-right corner will only loop the current region. If you have edited a region in the Timeline, the loop pointer will allow you to loop only the edited portion of the region.

  • You can rearrange the columns in the results list of the Loop Browser by dragging the column header. You can resize columns by dragging the right edge of the column header.

  • You can move a keyword button to a new position in the Loop Browser by click-dragging the button to the new position.

  • You can change a keyword by Ctrl-clicking a keyword button and selecting a new keyword from the contextual menu.

  • To resize the Loop Browser, click-drag the empty gray space to the left of the Record button in the transport controls.

  • To reset the keyword buttons in the Loop Browser to their original names and locations, click the Reset button in the GarageBand General Preferences window.
