Creating a New Movie Score Project

In Lesson 8, you used a GarageBand template from the welcome screen to create a new podcast project. GarageBand also includes a template for movie score projects. Instead of opening a project that has already been started for you in the GarageBand 3 Lessons folder, let's create a new movie score project using the GarageBand 3 templates, just as you might if you were working on your own.

1.

Launch GarageBand. If GarageBand is already open, choose File > New.

2.

In the GarageBand welcome screen, click the New Movie Score button.

3.

Save the project as Lesson 9 Movie Score to your My GarageBand Projects folder.

4.

Click Create.

The Lesson 9 Movie Score project opens, with the empty Video Track and Media Browser already showing. The Media Browser contains buttons for different types of media files (Audio, Photos, Movies), a browser where you can navigate to the media files you want to use, and a media list showing the media files in the current location.

Notice that the Movies button and the Movies folder in the Media Browser are selected. If the Movies folder on your computer includes movie files, they will be displayed in the lower pane of the Media Browser whenever you select the Movies folder.

The Movies pane of the Media Browser may include iTunes if you have created your own mp4 files compressed for your video iPod. Protected iTunes media will not appear in the Media Browser. You can also add other folders to the Media Browser so you can access media files anywhere on your computer.

5.

In the Media Browser, select the Movies for GarageBand folder, which you added in Lesson 1.

The thumbnail for Lesson 9 movie.mov is black because this video fades in from black at the beginning and fades out to black at the end. It will also appear black in the Video Preview pane when the playhead is at the beginning and end of the project.

Note

If you didn't add the Movies for GarageBand folder to the Media Browser back in Lesson 1, turn to the "Adding Movies to the Media Browser and Timeline" section at the end of Lesson 1. Follow the steps to add the folder to the Media Browser before continuing to the next step.
