Applying a Filter to an Object

In the next series of exercises, you'll apply a filter to the Surf movie in the Oakley project to stylize the look. As with behaviors, there are many methods for applying filters to objects in Motion. Let's start with the simple drag-and-drop method.

First, you'll need to unlock the surf_1_SD_jpg object on the Layers tab.

Unlocking an Object on the Layers Tab

In Lesson 4, you locked the surf_1_SD_jpg object in the project to prevent accidental movement or modification of the object. Locking an object also prevents the application of any filters, which happens to be your goal in this exercise. Let's unlock the object in the Layers tab so that you can apply a filter.

1.

Press Cmd-4 to open the Layers tab.

2.

On the Layers tab, click the Lock button next to the surf_1_SD_jpg file to unlock it.

3.

Click the surf_1_SD_jpg object on the Layers tab to select it.

4.

Press Cmd-4 to close the Layers tab.

Dragging a Filter to an Object in the Canvas

In the previous lessons, you've gained a lot of experience dragging things from the File Browser and Library to the Canvas. In this exercise, you'll drag the Posterize filter from the Library to the Canvas and then drop it on the surf_1_SD_jpg object to apply the filter.

When you selected the surf_1_SD_jpg object on the Layers tab, you also selected the same object in the Canvas.

1.

In the Library, locate and select the Posterize filter.

2.

Drag the Posterize filter from the Library to the Canvas and drop it on the surf_1_SD_jpg object.

A purple Posterize region appears in the mini-Timeline, and the surf_1_SD_jpg movie displays an impressionistic, posterized look in the Canvas.

3.

Press the spacebar to watch the project with the Posterize filter applied to the video clip.

NOTE

Your project in the Canvas may play more slowly than it normally does because your computer has to process the filter along with the rest of the project. As the playhead moves through the project, your computer processes and then remembers (caches in video RAM) each frame sequentially. Once all of the frames have been processed and stored in memory, the project will play faster and more smoothly, depending on your processor speed, graphics card, and available video RAM. You'll learn more about managing projects and media in Lesson 10.

4.

Press Cmd-S to save your progress.
