Duplicating Objects in the Canvas

Our goal in this exercise is first to resize the Sunset object and then to duplicate it in the Canvas. There are three ways to duplicate a selected object in the Canvas:

  • Choose Edit > Duplicate.

  • Press Cmd-D.

  • Hold down the Option key and drag the object.

Not only are you learning to duplicate objects in this lesson, but you also are learning about workflow. It's much easier to resize the object before you duplicate it. If you duplicate before you resize, you will have to resize both the original and the duplicate objects.

1.

Press Cmd- (hyphen) to zoom out of the Canvas by one level.

2.

Press Cmd-3 to open the Inspector tab.

3.

Change the Scale parameter to 27 percent.

The Sunset object shrinks to 27 percent of its original size in the Canvas.

4.

Drag the Sunset object to the upper-left corner of the Canvas.

Now let's use the Option-drag method to make a duplicate object in the Canvas. To Option-drag, you hold the Option key while you drag the object.

5.

Option-drag the Sunset object toward the right to make a duplicate; then release the mouse.

6.

Repeat step 5 until you have a total of four Sunset objects.

7.

Press Cmd-S to save your progress.
