Importing a File to the Layers Tab

You've already learned how to import a file by dragging it to the Canvas or clicking the Import button. In this exercise, your goal is to import a file to a specific layer.

There are two ways to import to a specific layer. You can select a layer on the Layers tab and click the Import button in the File Browser, or you can drag a file from the File Browser directly to the layer in the Project pane.

Let's drag the file directly to the Photographs layer in the Project pane.

1.

Press Cmd-1 to open the File Browser in the Utility window.

2.

Click the disclosure triangle next to the Photographs folder in the lower pane of the File Browser to see the contents of the folder.

NOTE

If your files appear as icons in the File Browser, click the List view button to see the lesson files in List view.

3.

Select the Big Ben London.jpg file to see it in the Preview area.

4.

Press the down arrow key to preview the next still in the list.

5.

Repeat step 4 until you see the last photo in the list, Sunset.jpg.

We'll use Sunset.jpg as the placeholder for the other photos in the Canvas.

NOTE

If the Sunset.jpg file is at the top of the list of photographs, you are viewing your list in reverse alphabetical order. Click the Name header at the top of the lower pane to reverse the order.

When you drag a file from the File Browser to a layer on the Layers tab, the layer is highlighted with a black border, and an Add symbol appears to show that you are adding a file to that layer.

6.

Drag the Sunset.jpg file from the File Browser and drop it on the Photographs layer on the Layers tab.

The Sunset file appears on the Photographs layer and in the Canvas.

7.

Press Cmd-S to save your progress.

8.

Press Cmd-4 to close the Layers tab.
