Renaming and Hiding a Layer

You've finished the background layer, so let's name it and then hide it. Naming layers as you build a project helps you keep the project organized.

By default, all layers are given the name Layer followed by a sequential number based on the number of layers with the same name in the project.

To change the name of a layer, you simply double-click the layer's Name field and type a new name.

1.

On the Layers tab, double-click the Name field of the layer.

2.

In the Name field, type Background and press Return.

The Name field changes to Background.

As you build your projects, it's a good idea to turn off layers that you aren't working on so that you can save your computer's processing power for the elements that you are currently building. You can always turn a layer back on whenever you need to see it.

The On column at the left of the Layers tab contains Activation check boxes for turning layers on and off. When a layer is active, the box appears blue with a check.

3.

Click the Activation check box for the Background layer to turn the layer off.

The layer name becomes dimmed, and the Activation boxes for the objects within the layer turn gray to show that the layer they inhabit is currently off.

To save space on the Layers tab, you can close layers to hide the contents. To hide or show the contents of a layer, you click the disclosure triangle to the left of the layer's icon.

4.

Click the disclosure triangle for the Background layer to hide the contents of the layer.
