Selecting and Deselecting Objects

As you work with the Motion interface, it's important to know what you have selected at all times. Many of the Motion features change depending on what is selected. To select an object, you simply click it with the Select/Transform tool. To deselect that object, you click the empty space outside of the frame. Let's try deactivating the circle.

1.

Click the circle to select it.

2.

Press Cmd- (hyphen) to zoom out one level.

3.

Click the empty space outside of your light blue Background object in the Canvas to deselect the circle.

To select the Shapes object without selecting the Circle object, you need to click an area of the Shapes object that doesn't include the circle.

4.

Click the the white square on the Shapes object to select Shapes object.

A bounding box appears around the entire Shapes object.

5.

Click the empty space outside the background to deselect the Shapes object.

6.

Press Shift-Z to again fit the project to the Canvas window.

NOTE

If you accidentally press the Z key by itself, you'll activate the Zoom tool. To get back to the Select/Transform tool, simply press Shift-S.

Project Tasks

Now it's your turn to apply what you've learned so far to your composite. First you'll move the circle so it overlaps the lower half of the white square. Then you'll add and resize the Images object on the Canvas. Finally, you'll add a drop shadow to the Images object on the Canvas. Use the illustration at the end of the steps as a visual guide.

1.

On the Canvas, click the yellow circle to select it.

2.

Drag the circle to the left until it overlaps the lower half of the white square.

3.

Click the empty space outside the background to deselect the circle.

4.

In the File Browser, select the Images file and drag it to the center of the Canvas. Use the Dynamic Guides to place it in the center of the frame.

5.

Press Cmd-(hyphen) to zoom out one level so you can clearly see the bounding box around the Images file.

6.

Press and hold Shift; then click and drag the handle at the upper right of the Images object to resize the object until it is about the same size as the combined square and circle.

7.

Drag the Images object toward the right of the frame so the top is even with the top of the white square. Leave an equal amount of background visible between the right and left sides of the Images object.

8.

Press D to open the Dashboard for the Images object.

9.

Add a drop shadow to the Images object; then close the Dashboard.
