Previewing the Finished Project

The best way to understand how the free-form tools work is to actually try them. Let's start by opening the completed 7-2 B-Shapes finished project to see what you're aiming for in this exercise.

You'll find the 7-2 B-Shapes finished project in the Lesson_07 folder.

1.

In the File Browser, open the Lesson_07 folder.

2.

Open the 7-2 B-Shapes finished project in the Finder.

The B-Shapes finished project opens in the Canvas. On the left side of the frame are two objects from the Content folder in the Library. On the right side of the frame are shapes resembling those objects. The shapes were created using the free-form tools.

As you can see, the Bezier shape is a combination of straight and curved lines. The BSpline shape, on the other hand, is curved, with no straight lines.

Now let's take a look at the points (dots) that were used to create these shapes.

3.

Ctrl-click the Bezier shape to open the contextual menu for that shape.

4.

Select Edit Points from the contextual menu.

The Bezier points used to create this shape become visible. A red line connects each point to create the shape. Now let's view the points for the BSpline shape.

5.

Ctrl-click the BSpline shape and choose Edit Points from the contextual menu.

Thin, straight lines connect the points in the BSpline shape. The points don't create the shape; instead, they restrict a curved shape within the lines. Huh? Imagine a blob of lava slowly creeping along, spreading in all directions. As the blob moves, its edges remain curved. To constrict the movement of the blob, you can place walls or other barriers. BSpline shapes are curved shapes that are contained and restricted by the barriers you create using points. This will make more sense when you actually try it.

6.

Choose File > Close to close the finished project.
