Adjusting the Opacity of the Ghost Clip

Adjusting the Opacity of the "Ghost" Clip

Right now, both of our clips have the same opacity; that is, both are "normal." For the Friendly Ghost Effect to work, however, our "ghost" clip needs to be faded out so that the actor playing the part of the spirit will appear to be see-through. To achieve this effect, we'll simply adjust the Opacity setting for the clip to less than 50%. A good setting for our purposes is 25%, but you can adjust this to your preferences. In addition, you can choose to adjust the opacity directly on the Timeline using the Opacity rubberband, or on the Properties panel. The instructions here cover using the Properties panel.

Make the Ghost Clip "See Through"

Click on the ghost-avi clip in the Video 2 track, if not already selected.

In the Properties panel, click the arrow next to Opacity to display the effect's controls, if they aren't already visible.

Drag the number next to Clip Opacity and set the opacity to 50.0%.

Tip

You can type 50 directly into this field.

Did You Know?

You can use the yellow rubberband to control opacity. You can use the yellow rubberband that runs the length of every video clip to set opacity. Be sure that the rubberband is controlling opacity (see the second Did You Know? below). Then click on the rubberband. With the mouse button held down the cursor changes to include small up and down arrows. Drag the rubberband down to decrease opacity, up to increase it. As you move the rubberband, Premiere Elements displays a small yellow box to show you the opacity amount.

You can choose what the rubberband controls. By default, the rubberband controls opacity, but you can set it to control other effects. To do so, click on the settings menu control in name bar at the top of the clip. It only appears at the head, or front, of the clip, so if you don't see it, scrub to the beginning of the clip. From the menu, select Opacity, Clip Opacity, as shown below.
