Cropping the Foreground Clip to Create a Multi-Dimensional Environment

Because Premiere Elements has multiple video tracks (up to 99 tracks, should you need them), you can create layer upon layer of backgrounds or images. Here, we are using another copy of the background image and cropping it to make the watering can appear to be in the foreground. If you wanted, you could add another track above (in Video 4) and crop that so that the bonsai plant could be effectively another object in the scene.

Use the Crop Effect to Create an Illusion of a Foreground

In the Media panel, select the Effects and Transitions button to switch to the Effects and Transitions view.

In the text box on the Effects and Transitions view, type crop.

Select the Crop effect from the Transform category of Video Effects and drag and drop it onto the elfgarden.bmp clip on the Video 3 track on the Timeline.

In the Properties panel for the elfgarden.bmp clip on the Video 3 track, click on the Crop effect so that it highlights. A box will appear around the elfgarden.bmp clip in the Monitor panel.

Select the top left handle of the box in the Monitor panel and drag it down towards the chrome watering can at the bottom right of the screen until you have framed the watering can (see illustration).

Did You Know?

You can create as many "layers" as you want. Here's how creative you can get with this: Film your elf standing on a chair peaking about. Then have him or her jump off, run around a bit, and exit. In "post," you can hide the chair behind the plant. The elf will appear to be jumping down from the plant. When the elf exits, he or she will appear to be running between the bonsai plant and the watering can.
