Applying Color and Contrast Effects to the Elf Clip

A best practice when working with green screen clips is to apply the Auto Color and Auto Contrast effects. This will help to successfully remove all of the green background from behind the clip. Premiere Elements' Auto Color and Auto Contrast effects make the colors in the clip richer and more vibrant, thus enhancing the green background as well. All this makes it easier to "key" out the green in a later task.

Apply the Auto Color Effect

Click on the Effects and Transitions button on the Media panel to switch to the Effects and Transitions view, if it's not already the current view.

In the text box on the Effects and Transitions view of the Media panel, type auto.

Select the Auto Color effect from the Adjust effects in the Video Effects list and drag and drop it onto the elf.avi clip on the Video 2 track.

In the Properties panel, click the triangle next to the Auto Color effect to view the effect controls.

Set the Auto Color settings as follows:

  • Temporal Smoothing: (leave at 0.00)

  • Scene Detect: (unchecked)

  • Black Clip: 2.00%

  • White Clip: 3.00%

  • Snap Neutral Midtones: (unchecked)

  • Blend With Original: 60%

Apply the Auto Contrast Effect

Select the Auto Contrast effect from the Adjust effects in the Video Effects list and drag and drop it onto the elf.avi clip on the Video 2 track.

In the Properties panel, click the triangle next to the Auto Contrast effect to view the effect controls.

Set the Auto Contrast settings as follows:

  • Temporal Smoothing: (leave at 0.00)

  • Scene Detect: (unchecked)

  • Black Clip: 1.00%

  • White Clip: 1.00%

  • Blend With Original: 30%

Did You Know?

It's a study in contrasts. When using a green- or bluescreen effect in your future projects, apply the Auto Color and Auto Contrast effects, play with the effects' controls, and see what you come up with. Click the effect's toggle button (the eyeball, shown at left) to see what the clip looks like with the effect turned on and off. While brightening a clip and increasing the color saturation and contrast can improve how a clip responds to keying out the background, "results may vary," as they say on the infomercials. So, try the effect and if you like it keep it. If you don't or aren't sure, click the "eyeball" off and leave it turned off. Remember, video editing is both a science and an art, and it sometimes takes experimentation to get just the look you want.
