Adding Noise to Simulate the Graininess of Night Vision

Because of the low-to-no light available at night (and the need for night vision technology), the images in the night vision "scope" are typically grainy. To simulate this graininess, we'll apply the Noise effect in Premiere Elements and adjust it slightly so that we have just the right amount of graininess in our clip.

A Noise in the Night

In the text box on the Effects and Transitions view on the Media panel, type noise.

Note

The Noise effect appears in the Stylize folder in the Video Effects section of the Effects and Transitions panel. (You may need to scroll down to find it.)

Drag and drop the Noise effect onto the nightsuspects.avi clip on the Video 1 track on the Timeline.

With the nightsuspects.avi clip selected on the Timeline, click the triangle next to the Noise effect on the Properties panel to reveal the effect's controls.

Adjust the Noise level by entering 15% as the Amount of Noise.

Note

Leave the Noise Type and Clipping check boxes as is.
