Creating the TV News Background

We'll be using one of the "graphic loop" clips from Digital Juice, 144_Background1.mov, along with text that we'll create in Premiere Elements later, to build a convincing background for our newscaster project. Once our background is in place, we'll move on to add our anchorman to the scene in the next task.

Add the Background Graphic

For this project, we'll need to be in the Timeline view because we are working with multiple clips on mulTiple video tracks. Therefore, if the My Project panel is not already in Timeline view, click the Timeline button to switch.

Select the back drop clip on the Media panel, 144_Background1.mov, and drag it to Video 1 track on the My Project panel. Be sure to line up the front of this clip with the start of the Video 1 track.

Select the 144_Background1.mov on the Media panel again, and drag it a second time to the My Project panel directly behind the first copy of the 144_Background1.mov clip on the Video 1 track.

Important

Why are we dragging the clip twice to the Timeline? This is because the duration of the clip is not sufficient to last as long as we need it to. Two copies of the clip are exactly right for this project. Had we needed the back drop to be longer, we would have added the clip again to the Timeline, as many times as we needed.

Create the Text

Click the Add Text button at the top of the Monitor panel to begin to add a title for the news background.

Tip

Safe margins should automatically appear. If they don't, you can turn them on yourself by clicking on the MORE button in the upper right corner of the Monitor panel. Then, click Safe Title Margin.

Type The Nightly News with Joe in the text box. Press the ENTER key on your keyboard after the words Nightly and News. (Your text box should look like the one in the illustration.)

Tip

Should the Add Text text box become unhighlighted before you start typing, click inside it and drag across the default text with your mouse to highlight it.

Select Times New Roman from the fonts menu on the Properties panel.

Click the Right Align Text button to set the text to be right-justified

Click the Selection Tool (the "arrow" button) on the Monitor panel.

Click the text box and move it to the upper right corner of the panel, as shown in the illustration. Be sure to stay within the "safe text zone," which is represented by the inside white box.

Highlight Nightly News and change the size to 115.

Highlight The and change the size to 55.

Highlight with Joe and change the size to 55, as well.

Grab the tail end of the Title 01 clip on the Video 2 track and drag it to the right until it is the same length as the background clips.

Important

If, for some reason, your Title 01 clip is not located on the Video 2 track and at the start location for the track (00;00;00;00), move it there now.
