Bringing the Clip into Premiere Elements and Colorizing It

In Premiere Elements, we will import the "newly old" clip and add it to the Timeline. Once it's there, we'll need to add two simple color-related effects to the clipthe Black and White effect and the Tint effectwhich will give it that "sepia tone" look of old film and photographs. This will add to the overall aged effect we're going for.

Add the "Old" AVI Clip to Your Project

Start Premiere Elements and create a new project called fadedfilm.

Click the Get Media from button on the Media panel.

Select Files or Folders.

Using the Add Media dialog box, find the 1850-old.avi file you exported from Movie Maker and click Open.

Note

By default, Movie Maker exports to your My Video folder, which is located under your My Documents folder.

Drag and drop the 1850-old.avi from the Media panel onto the Video 1 track on the Timeline so that the head (front) of the clip is at the beginning of the track.

Tip

If you are in Sceneline view, just drop the clip onto the first scene placeholder (as shown in the illustration).

In the Properties panel for the clip, click the Fade Out button under Opacity.

Change the Clip to Black & White

In the Media panel, click the Effects and Transitions button to switch to the Effects and Transitions view.

In the Effects and Transitions view of the Media, type black in the text box.

Drag and drop the Black & White effect on the 1850-old.avi clip on the Video 1 track on the Timeline.

Tint the Clip

Return to the Effects and Transitions view of the Media panel and now type tint in the text box.

Drag and drop the Tint effect from Effects and Transitions view onto the 1850-old.avi clip on the Video 1 track on the Timeline.

In the Properties panel for the 1850-old.avi clip, click the triangle next to Tint to open the effect's controls.

Click on the color picker for Map Black To and on the Color Picker dialog box set the following:

  • H: 40%

  • S: 100%

  • B: 35%

Click OK to close the Color Picker dialog box.

Click on the color picker for Map White To and on the Color Picker dialog box set the following:

  • H: 45%

  • S: 70%

  • B: 100%

Click OK to close the Color Picker dialog box.

Back on the Properties panel for the 1850-old.avi clip, set the Amount to Tint to 50%.
