The Minimal System for Creating SFX

One final thing about special effects: they require a lot of horsepower. If you are already editing your videos, you are probably aware that video editing is a high-end task for your computer. Adobe recommends the following configuration for Premiere Elements, but keep in mind that this represents their "entry level" setup:

  • Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD® Opteron® or Athlon® 64 (SSE2 support required)

  • Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, Home Edition, or Media Center Edition with Service Pack 2

  • 256 MB of RAM

  • 4 GB of available hard-disk space (This is for installation of the program only)

  • Sound card

  • DVD-ROM drive (compatible DVD burner required to burn DVDs)

  • 15" monitor running at 1,024x768 16-bit XGA display

  • Microsoft DirectX 9 compatible sound and display drivers

  • DV/i.LINK/FireWire/IEEE 1394 or a USB2 interface

Special effects, where changes are applied to each frame in a clip, and to many clips in a video track, and to many tracks in a project, and to both video and audio tracks at the same time, obviously requires a little more than the minimum.
