Chapter 5.  Creating Tables

When drawing cells in the layout view, it's a good idea to have a direction in the layout of your page. The reason I say this is because it's very easy to become sloppy with the layout view. You do want to make sure you're making as few spaces between columns as possible. The cleaner your table, the more predictable your page will look in a variety of browsers.

To draw a cell, click the Layout Cell button under the Layout tab of the Insert panel. Your cursor changes to a crosshair. You can now draw out a cell in any dimensions within the layout table.

When you select a cell it appears blue, in contrast to the table, which appears green. You can resize the cell by dragging any one of the resize handles. You can also drag and move the cell into a new location by clicking and dragging the border, without dragging a handle.

You cannot draw a cell in or on top of another cell; however, you can draw a table within the cell. You may want to create a nested table and that's the best way to do it.

Modifying Layouts

When you want to modify layout cells, in terms of Height and Width alignment, you'll find that it's a good idea to use both the standard view as well as the design view when creating tables. Some of the alignment options are available only in the standard view.

You may also want to consider merging a series of empty cells in the standard view to make a cleaner table than what the design view is generating.
