This chapter is for Dreamweaver designers and developers who are upgrading. If you are fairly new to Dreamweaver or you're not too comfortable with it, you may want to skip this chapter and move ahead to Chapter 2, "The Dreamweaver MX Interface."

Dreamweaver MX marks a new generation of Web development. Macromedia's latest effort on its flagship product hosts a series of new features and integrates several other applications within this product. Dreamweaver MX provides an authoring environment that personal designers or Web development teams can use to streamline their workflow. Designers, developers, and programmers can all benefit equally from this one product to quickly design, produce, deliver, and manage Web sites and Internet applications.

This chapter is designed for those who upgraded to Dreamweaver MX and are itching to learn and use the new feature set of this powerful release. I would like to take this time to clear up any prejudices that anyone may have or think I have. My co-authors and I are all bilingual and intend to share the screenshots between the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. All Web developers should have each machine in their studios anyway to completely and thoroughly check each site that they deploy. This version of Dreamweaver offers few differences between these two platforms, although more than the previous edition did. The most dramatic differences between the two happen in the Web application development portion of this book. All differences are noted.

I would also like to point out that with Dreamweaver MX, several Macromedia products have been integrated into Dreamweaver, making it one of the most exciting releases in a while. Dreamweaver UltraDev, HomeSite, and ColdFusion Studio have all been brought together in Dreamweaver MX.

So now, without further ado, here are the key new features of Dreamweaver MX enjoy!
