Proactive protection is the processes taken to keep an attack from occurring. This is done by making the system difficult to locate, uninteresting to hackers, and difficult to compromise. The goal is to reduce both the number of total attacks and the number of successful attacks.

There is a great deal of information, research, and tools to help a system prevent successful attacks. Unfortunately, vendors continue to be slow to provide systems which are secure out-of-the-box.
