Install Minimum Base Operating System

Even if your system comes with a preinstalled operating system, the security benefits of starting with a clean operating system install, and knowing exactly what you have, far exceed the minor cost in your time to install it. During the initial installation, configuration, and testing, make sure that your system is not connected to any untrusted networks. The system may need to be connected to a network, even if it is only a local hub, so that the network interfaces can initialize appropriately. Document your configuration steps as you perform them ” you may discover later that a change that was made causes unforeseen problems. And it may take several install iterations to get everything working correctly.

Boot the system from the installation media. These systems will proceed to a menu offering you the chance to select the option of installing a new system or repairing an existing system. There will also be the ability to configure some basic settings which may be required before the operating system is installed.

Installing Linux

Before the actual install starts, there are a number of questions and options to select concerning language, keyboard layout, and mouse type. Then you will be prompted for the type of install you want ” Workstation, Server, Laptop, or Custom. The custom installation gives you the most flexibility, but requires the most knowledge of the system on which you are installing. The Linux installation leads you directly through the process ” partitioning the disk, boot loader installation, network configuration (if you plan to install over the network), language selection, time zone, authentication model, and finally, selection of the software packages to be installed.

All the packages should be evaluated for their need before installing them on the system. Installing too few packages during the installation is preferable to installing too many. The rpm command can be used later to install any additional packages which were overlooked.

Installing HP-UX 11i

With the 11i release of HP-UX, the installation process groups the filesets into "operating environment" bundles. These bundles are not alterable during the installation, so an entire bundle has to be loaded onto the system. "HP-UX 11i Base OS" is the smallest of these environments and contains over 600 filesets . It should be the selected environment to be installed.

Interrupt the boot sequence and boot from the CD-ROM.

 BO ALT

 Interact with IPL (Y, N, or Cancel)?> N
