What is Value?

The question of value is almost an epistemological question. It depends very much on whose perspective is being taken. For our purposes, we will assume the perspective of the shareowners of the enterprise. Other perspectives exist, such as those of customers, employees, the public-at-large, and so on. Ultimately though, the first perspective that matters most is usually that of the owners and investors of the company. A shareholder revolution has occurred within the past decade due to the emergence of mutual funds companies and widespread pension plans like 401 (k)s. In the past couple of years, we have seen increasingly fickle shareholders reward profitable companies while bludgeoning others. One Wall Street message is once again clear: in the post-Internet bubble economy, shareholder value is vital. And since project management is a corporate asset, managers and investors are seeking an answer to the question "What is project management's return on investment?"
