Using Trusted Locations

Trusted locations are established on a hard drive or a network. These locations essentially bypass the Trust Center security feature in PowerPoint 2007. For example, a document that contains macros might be considered a threat by the Trust Center. Moving the document to a trusted location lets you open the document without any changes to the macro settings.

If you are on a network, your administrator has probably created a trusted location for you. If not, you can use the trusted locations automatically created when you installed the Microsoft Office system. These are usually in Program Files/Microsoft Office/Templates or Office 12/Startup. You can also create and manage your own trusted location in PowerPoint 2007 using the Trust Center, which is shown in Figure 20–3.

Create a Trusted Location

When you don’t want the Trust Center to verify the content when you open a file, you should create a trusted location for the file. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open PowerPoint 2007.

  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and click PowerPoint Options. Click Trust Center in the navigation pane on the left.

  3. Under Microsoft Office PowerPoint Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings.

  4. In the navigation pane on the left, click Trusted Locations. Then click Add New Location.

    Note

Do not select your entire Documents or My Documents folder as a trusted location. Instead, create a subfolder within one of those folders, and make that your trusted location. Remember, you are trying to foil hackers, not help them!

  5. Use Browse to select or create a folder location if necessary, as shown here. You can include subfolders if you like-to do so, select the Subfolders Of This Location Are Also Trusted check box.

    Note

If your security settings do not allow the remote or network path location you have entered to be designated as a trusted location, an error message will appear. Click OK and select a new location, or ask your administrator.

  6. Type the purpose for the trusted location in the Description box.

  7. Click OK.

Remove a Trusted Location

Sometimes it’s necessary to remove a trusted location. For example, maybe the folder became corrupted, or maybe you have decided to place documents in a different location on the hard drive. Removing a trusted location is a simple process, as explained here:

  5. In the Trusted Locations Path pane, click the trusted location you want to remove.

  6. Click Remove.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Click OK to close the PowerPoint Options dialog box.

Modify a Trusted Location

If you want to change the location of a trusted folder, follow these steps:

  5. In the Trusted Locations Path pane, click the trusted location you want to modify.

  6. Click Modify.

  7. In the Trusted Location dialog box, select the new location under Path by clicking Browse or by typing the new location.

  8. Change the purpose details if necessary, and select or clear the Subfolders Of This Location Are Also Trusted check box.
