Exercise Solutions

Exercise 1: Possible Solutions

Your answers may be slightly different than the ones presented here, but generally should be similar.

  1. Marcy should verify that the flaw exists and contact the developers immediately to address the problem.

  2. There are many things that Marcy should have done earlier in the project. She should have made certain that the multiple search capability was part of the project requirements. She should have reviewed the work throughout the project to confirm the existence of the search ability. She should have asked her developers for their input and advice on what could make the application better.

  3. In this situation, as the work is due in a very short matter of time, Marcy should speak with management about the flaw and assure them it is being addressed. As the web site is currently functional to an extent, it should be released in a tiered manner. The current web site should go live and then be replaced with the updated application as soon as it is finished and approved.

Marcy may also elect to assign additional developers to the work to shorten the time frame to include the multiple search capability. It may be that the developers are able to complete the request quickly, but they are currently bogged down with other assignments.

  4. Marcy can report to management that overall the project is very healthy . She should also emphasize that with a few tweaks, the application will be excellent .

Exercise 2: Possible Solutions

Your answers may be slightly different than the ones presented here, but generally should be similar.

  1. Obviously the shock of 480 laptops being delivered at once was not in the project plan, so Robert should first calm himself and his staff down. The volume of computers will make completing the project on time impossible .

  2. Robert should report to management the good news and the bad news about all of the laptops having arrived. The good news is that the hardware is finally in place; the bad news is that they are late and there are 480 workstations to configure and drop ship.

  3. Robert should have created a closer relationship with the manufacturer to ensure the laptops were delivered earlier in the project, or not paid for the laptops until they were delivered. Robert could also have considered ordering laptops from other vendors .

  4. First, consider if it is possible to complete the project on time, given all of the hardware is in place. If not, then a plan to place an image on the hard drives and ship the laptops to the cities must be drafted. Hardware security needs to be addressed so none of the laptops are compromised.
