Exercise solutions

Exercise 1: Possible Solution

Your proposed solution may be something to this effect: As the project manager, Michelle should first reason with Jerry that this is the plan approved by management and the servers are to be replaced by Windows 2003. Michelle should then let Jerry know that the servers in Nashville and Atlanta have been moved onto Windows 2003. If there were any difficulties in installing the servers, Michelle should pass that information along to Jerry.

Another approach may be to interview Jerry as to why he s hesitant to move onto Windows 2003. It may be that Jerry does not understand the technology and feels threatened by it. A solution could be to work with Jerry through the installation and then provide training for Jerry through a Microsoft training provider. Tasks that need to be completed on Jerry s server can be done remotely until Jerry is comfortable with the solution.

Exercise 2: Possible Solution

Your proposed solution may be something to this effect: You should immediately speak with the application designer to discuss the issue. It may be that the designer is aware of the application status, and the hours worked on the project is a portion of the overall formula to communicate the customer s plans and billing information.

Of course, it may also be that the application developer does not have a clear understanding of the project s requirements. A meeting with the designer is needed to ensure the project is on track or to move the project back in alignment with the expected deliverables.

Exercise 3: Possible Solution

Your proposed solution may be something to this effect: Depending on the available funds, a faster connection should be implemented between Phoenix and Tempe. This would allow the database to replicate its information to all of the sites through the WAN connections. If funds are lacking, you may elect to edit the frequency of updates from Tempe to Phoenix. This second solution, while cost effective, may not be the best, however, because the working data in Tempe may be out of sync with the rest of the organization.
