How to Prepare for the Exam

At a minimum, preparing for Solaris 9 exams requires that you obtain and study the following materials:

  • The Solaris 9 documentation in printed form, on CD-ROM as delivered with Solaris 9, or on the Web at http://docs.sun.com. You can also download the documentation CD-ROM from Sun's Web site.

  • The exam test objectives and sample questions on the Sun certification Web page (http://training.sun.com/US/certification/solaris/ netadmin .html).

  • This Exam Cram 2 book. It's the first and last thing you should read before taking the exam.

Also, you'll find any or all of the following materials useful in your quest for Solaris 9 network administration expertise:

  • Hands-on Experience ” Obtain a copy of Solaris 9 from Sun's Web site (http://www.sun.com). Ideally, you need at least two (networked) workstations to be able to replicate the network environment and make use of the functionality. As you work your way through the book, try the commands and utilities, and explore the details of each. Experience is the best way to learn and remember the details that you need to know to pass the exam. The Solaris 9 Operating Environment can be downloaded, free of charge, or obtained on CD-ROM, with you paying only the cost of media and shipping.

  • Classroom Training ” Sun offers classroom training, computer-based training, and online training that you will find useful to help you prepare for the exam. The course SA-399 is the specific course that is most relevant to this exam. The classes are quite expensive, although they do offer a condensed form of learning to help you reinforce your Solaris knowledge. The exam is closely related to the classroom training provided by Sun, so it is an advantage to take the classes to get the Solaris-specific (and classroom-specific) terminology under your belt.

  • Other Publications ” In this book, you'll find direct references to other publications and resources that will provide you with further information on the subjects taught here. Each chapter ends with a "Need to Know More?" section, providing pointers to more complete resources.

In addition, don't forget the Cram Sheet at the front of the book. It is designed to capture the most important material that you should memorize right before you take the test.

Take at least one practice exam. Each chapter in this book ends with a number of exam-type questions that are designed to review what you've just studied. This book also includes two full practice exams (and answers) which should be taken as if you are taking the real test. Give yourself 105 minutes and be honest: Don't look up the answers until after you complete the test ”the only person you'll be fooling is yourself!

Sun also provides a practice exam that can be purchased from them. This is a worthwhile expense if you want even more exposure to the type of questions that are going to be asked in the real test.
