Chapter 12. Advanced Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

Terms you'll need to understand:

  • add_install_client

  • Debug mode

  • DHCP server macro

  • DHCP server symbol

  • Hostname acquisition

  • JumpStart client

Concepts you'll need to master:

  • Explain how to configure a DHCP server to support JumpStart clients .

  • Given DHCP debug output, deduce resolution strategies.

JumpStart is a facility provided with the Solaris OE that allows the operating environment to be installed automatically on numerous hosts . The JumpStart process is not discussed in this book because it is part of the Solaris 9 system administrator certification, a prerequisite for the exam covered in this book. It is therefore assumed that the reader is already familiar with JumpStart. This chapter describes how to perform advanced DHCP functions such as configuring a DHCP server to support JumpStart clients and troubleshooting both the DHCP server and client.
