The VMR is one of the most powerful components within DirectShow. Using it, you can mix as many as 16 simultaneous video streams into a single output stream. That output stream can be sent to its own window, managed by the VMR, or sent to an application-specified window. The VMR can even use the output as a texture map applied to a Direct3D model. Although it s powerful, the VMR has elegant and simple interfaces that expose its functionality without unnecessary complications, which makes it the ideal filter for nearly any DirectShow application that renders video to the display. If DirectShow is the hidden jewel within DirectX, the VMR is the hidden jewel within DirectShow.
