3D rotation object

This type of object starts as a profile which is then rotated 360 degrees through its y-axis (a pole running up and down through its center). Page 458



Absolute Reference

A cell reference that does not change if you copy the formula elsewhere. 184



Anchor point

One corner of a range of cells ; typically, the upper-left cell in a range is considered the anchor point. 123



Arguments

Values appearing inside a function's parentheses that the function uses to produce its result. 210



Background cache

A memory area that Impress can use to speed some operations. 312



Cache

A temporary storage area on your computer. 545



Cell reference

The name of the cell comprised of its column and row intersection such as G14. 164



Conditional formatting

The process of formatting cells automatically, based on data they contain. 248



Context-sensitive help

An automated system that looks at what you're currently doing and provides assistance for that particular menu, button, or command. 19



Custom sort list

A pre-defined list of values (such as month names and the days of the week), or a list you define that determine a special sorting rank. 294



Data validity

A check to determine whether data entered into a cell in valid, defined by a set of criteria that you set up. 274



Dimension line

A line with arrows on each end that intersects perpendicular straight lines used to show a dimensions. 401



Edit points

Also called data points; refers to points on your drawing that you drag to modify that part of the shape or freeform line. 411



Extensions

Small add-on programs that add specific functionality to Firefox. 543



Fields (database)

The columns in a database representing individual descriptions of the records. Page 286



Fields (options)

Placeholders in your documents that OpenOffice.org fills in with actual values such as page numbers , the time, and date. 144



Formulas

An equation comprised of numeric values and often cell addresses and range names that produces a mathematical result. 180



Functions

Built-in mathematical and logical routines that perform common calculations. 198



Gallery

A collection of graphics that you can insert into your documents. 121



Gamma value

The brightness of an image's midtone colors. 462



Gradient

A transition from one color or pattern to another on the same slide. 348



Handouts master slide

A slide that shows the formatting and number of slides per handout. 376



HTML

Abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language and refers to the code needed to make Web pages display properly inside a Web browser. 381



Hyperlinks

Text that's usually underlined in help screens and Web pages that you can click to navigate to learn more about the topic mentioned in the text. 20



Import

To load data from a non-Calc program into Calc. 277



Indent

Space between the left and right page margins and the current paragraph. 65



Insert mode

The state of Writer where new text you type is inserted before existing text. 38



Insertion point

A vertical text cursor that shows where the next character you type will appear. 37



Integers

Numbers without decimal points such as 0, 52164 and 435. 209



Layers

Groups of items, such as your drawing's graphics and text, controls you place on a drawing, and dimension lines for three-dimensional space control. Page 401



Long click

Click and hold your left mouse button, without dragging your mouse, until a toolbar or option appears. 18



Macros

A scenes of keystrokes, menu selections, dialog box selections, and other mouse or keyboard-related activities that you save as recorded steps. 471



Nonbreaking space

A space that appears between words when you print the document but that does not break at the end of a line. 37



OLE object

Abbreviation for Object Linking and Embedding and refers to an object that can be placed inside documents of different types. 356



Operator-hierarchy model

A pre-defined order of operators when calculating equations. 181



PDF

The name (and filename extension) given to documents that conform to Adobe Systems' Portable Document Format readable by Web browsers and most computers. 152



Plug-in

A program that can open , play, or display a file of a particular type, such as a sound or movie file. 543



Primary key

A field that is never duplicated in any record in a database. 496



Range

One or more cells, selected adjacent to each other in a rectangular manner, which you can name and treat as a single entity. 201



Records

The rows in a database representing all the data for a single item. 286



Regular expressions

The name given to OpenOffice.org's extensive wildcard character support. 52



Relative reference

A cell that is referenced in relation to the current cell. 182



RGB values

Refers to the red, green, and blue elements of a color. 430



Scale

A ratio that describes the size of objects on your screen and how that size relates to their actual printed size. 393



Sheets

Numerical information presented in a tabular row and column format with text that labels and discusses the data. Also (loosely) called spreadsheets. Page 162



Shortcut key

A keystroke, such as Ctrl+B, that performs an action such as formatting selected text or executing a macro. 473



Snap lines

Logical lines that align the objects on your drawing to one another. 390



Style

A set of character and paragraph formats that you can apply to text to change that text's format details. 86



Tables

Collections of information organized in rows and columns. 109



Template

A pre-defined document with styles and other formatting, such as columns and tables, that forms a model for new documents. 86



Themes

A collection of graphic files that you save as a group under a theme name. The Gallery comes with several pre-designed themes such as Backgrounds and Bullets. 444



Transition

The way one slide leaves the presentation screen and the next slide appears. 308



TWAIN

A scanner hardware interface format recognized by most of today's computers. 123



User-defined index

An index that is secondary to the primary, alphabetical index such as a figure index or a list of people index. 107



Vector graphics

Graphics defined by geometric shapes such as lines, curves, rectangles, and polygons. 390



Web hosting service

A company you hire, or an inside computer support center that provides disk space where you can store Web pages and other online content. 380



X-axis

The horizontal axis on a slide (or drawing) with the lower-left corner of your slide having an X-axis value of 1 and increasing as you move up the slide. 313



Y-axis

The vertical axis on a slide (or drawing) with the lower-left corner of your slide having a Y-axis value of 1 and increasing as you move to the right on the slide. 313
