Chapter 26: Administering Crystal Enterprise

Overview

Crystal Enterprise (CE) presents a fairly complex approach to web-based report automation and distribution. Its ability to schedule reports to run on a regular basis, and then make those reports available to viewers in a variety of ways, has made CE an increasingly popular method for automating corporate reporting. CE version 10 has improved upon previous versions by allowing additional document types (such as Adobe PDF files, Microsoft Word and Excel documents, and so forth) to be added to the CE Web Desktop, by allowing script and executable programs to be scheduled, and so on (an overview of new CE 10 features can be found in Chapter 24).

As is usually the case, the more flexible and capable a software system is, the more complex its infrastructure becomes. Crystal Enterprise is no exception. Its scalable, flexible, feature-rich foundation for information automation and dissemination results in a more complex and complicated hardware and software combination in the back end. Part of the initial process of implementing CE, as well as a continuing requirement of organizations that put it in place, is CE administration. Depending on the size of the organization, number and geographic distribution of CE users, and complexity of implementation, CE administration tasks may be assigned to a single person on a part-time basis, all the way to several delegated administrators across the organization.

This chapter, while not covering every possible combination of CE implementations and administrative tasks, will give those tasked with implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining their CE systems good background on common administrative tasks. Working with various software components , user management, and server configuration are among the common tasks taken on by Crystal Enterprise administrators.
