5.7 Summary

In this chapter we described IS-136 networks. In particular, we described the network architecture based on the TIA/EIA 136 standard, focusing on the mechanisms adopted in these networks at various protocol levels to provide data services. Two main types of data services are supported and have been described: teleservices and circuit switched data services. Examples of IS-136 teleservices have been provided, as well as the mechanisms and protocols to support them. In the same way, examples of circuit switched data services (in particular, e-mail and Web browsing) have been described. In conclusion, we described enhancements to the IS-136 standard that have been defined for the evolution of IS-136 networks, even if such enhancements have not been deployed by any network.
