Recommended Hardware
This section provides hardware and software recommendations that will help you get the most out of the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler. Many of the suggestions are intended to improve overall system performance, while others are meant to make the product more enjoyable to use.
Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements
Microsoft’s standard Visual C++ compiler package will operate on a wide range of Intel-based computers.
Note There are special versions of the Visual C++ compiler for the MIPS & DEC Alpha AXP and Macintosh systems.
The following is a list of Microsoft’s minimum hardware and software requirements necessary to run the 32-bit version of the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler package:
Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT
  Microsoft Visual C++
  Intel 486 or greater
  16 megabytes of RAM
800 600 or greater resolution display
20 megabytes free hard disk space
A mouse or other pointing device
InstallWizard is designed for a typical developer’s computer, which means a Pentium processor and 800 600 resolution or better. You can run InstallWizard on a 640 480 screen, but you may need to arrange the windows differently to see all the information.
Recommended Hardware and Software
Minimal hardware and software requirements are not always the optimal choice for ease of use, performance, and overall product enjoyment. We recommend the following system profile to optimize the development cycle of C and C++ programs:
A Pentium based PC, running at 200MHz (or higher)
  32 MB of RAM
  A 1-gigabyte hard disk space
  A Super VGA monitor
One high-density floppy disk drive (3.5")
One CD-ROM drive (for online documentation)
  Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse
You will want a fast microprocessor that can handle the size and complexity of advanced Windows applications. Having a lot of memory maximizes the overall performance of both Microsoft Visual C++ and the Windows environment. (You can also obtain these performance enhancements by having a large amount of free disk space.)
Two operating systems are emerging as the new standard for 32-bit PC-based computers; Windows 95/98 or its more robust cousin Windows NT. If you have not upgraded to either Windows 95/98 or Windows NT, you should do so before installing your Microsoft C++ compiler package.
The improvements made to Windows 95/98 and Windows NT provide you with the features and performance necessary to create state-of-the-art Windows applications. As you develop these applications in a graphical environment, your eyes will appreciate Super VGA resolution monitors. Buy a monitor with as large a screen as possible.
