Add Shapes vs. Edit Shapes

1.

Open Shake.

2.

On the Image tab, select the RotoShape node.

When the RotoShape node is active, the associated tools appear on the Viewer toolbar.

There are two modes in RotoShape: Add Shapes mode (below, left) and Edit Shapes mode (below, right). You draw your initial shape and add shapes in the Add Shapes mode, and you modify or animate the shape in Edit Shapes mode.

3.

Start by clicking a blank spot in the Viewer.

When you click a blank spot, a new knot (or point) appears there. As you click, if you drag away from the knot, tangents are created.

4.

Continue the shape by dragging away from the knots as you draw to create tangents.

In Add Shapes mode, the shape does not render until you close the shape.

5.

To close the shape, click the first knot that you added to the Viewer.

When you are in Add Shapes mode, the shape will not draw (and will therefore not affect later nodes). When you close the shape by clicking the first knot, Shake automatically switches you to Edit Shapes mode. In this mode, if you click a blank spot and drag, you are now selecting knots.

Either drag to select a new group of knots, Shift-drag to add to your group of active knots, or Command-drag to remove from your active group of knots.

Inserting and Modifying Points and Tangents

1.

Insert a new knot by pressing Shift and clicking a segment area.

A new knot will appear.

2.

Remove a knot by selecting it and then pressing the Delete key or clicking the Delete Knot button.

You can modify a tangent in two ways: spline or linear. If you select the tangent, you can toggle between Spline (below, left) and Line mode (right).

3.

Select all the knots on the shape and click the Spline/Line button to toggle to the Line setting.

In this example, all knots have been made linear.

4.

Click the Spline/Line button to return to the Spline setting.

5.

Try breaking a tangent by Control-dragging on the end of it.

Once the tangent is broken, you can release the Control key.

6.

Drag one of the two broken tangents and notice that the tangents are locked relative to each other.

To realign the tangents, press Shift and click the tangent end.
