Specifying Font Color

When you change the background color of a page, as you did in the first exercise of this lesson, you might also need to change the color of the text to avoid viewing problems. Black text doesn't display on a black background, for example. When choosing a color scheme for your document, try to select combinations of colors that work well together and have enough contrast between them. Colors that are too similar to each other can be very hard to view, as can complementary colors, especially on a computer screen. In the following steps, you'll change the default font color in the index.html document.

1.

Choose Modify > Page Properties and verify that Appearance is selected in the Category list.

The Appearance section of the Page Properties dialog box provides a number of options that will allow you to adjust a wide variety of document settings.

2.

Click the color box for the Text color option.

A color palette pops up, similar to the one that you used to pick the background color for the document earlier in this lesson.

3.

Select the dark reddish-black color with the hexadecimal code #330000 and then click OK.

You can either type the hexadecimal color code into the text field or you can click to select the color from the swatches. After you click OK, the Page Properties dialog box closes, and you return to the document.

Note

You can access an additional Colors dialog box by choosing Text > Color. Hexadecimal color codes can also be typed directly into the color text field, alongside the Text Color picker on the Property inspector.

4.

Select the text Welcome to Yoga Sangha. Click the Text Color box in the Property inspector and choose a medium orange color (#FFCC33).

Similar to font face and size options, font color is defined in Dreamweaver through CSS styles. By applying a color, you have created a new style. You can see the name of the style listed in the Style menu on the Property inspector. The number of your style might differ from those shown in the examples if you have created any additional styles by experimenting with font face, size, or color attributes. If you apply font, size, or color options to text that already has a style, the new attributes will added to the older style if the selected text is the only instance of that style. If there are other instances of the style or if you are applying new attributes to only a portion of the previously styled text, Dreamweaver will create a new style.

As you style text, it is a good idea to keep your styles organizedtry not to randomly apply text attributes because Dreamweaver will create new styles for each new combination. Instead, think about creating a system of organized styles that inherit attributes as needed. You'll learn more about inheritance later in this lesson.

Note

You can keep track of the hexadecimal colors used in your sites through the Assets panel, which is located in the Files panel group. You can also open the Assets panel by choosing Window > Assets. To access the color assets, click the Colors icon in the left column of the Assets panel. Radio buttons across the top of the Assets panel give you two options for viewing colors: Site and Favorites. Clicking the Site list radio button shows the colors that have already been used within the Yoga Sangha project site or your current active site. You won't see colors in the list if you haven't used any colors in your site. If you have defined colors, but do not see them listed, click the Refresh Site List button in the lower-right corner of the panel. You will see colors in this list that you have not yet used because there are colors used throughout documents in other lesson folders in the Lights of the Coast project site. To ensure that the colors you use are consistent across your site, you can save commonly used colors in the Assets panel as Favorites. To save a favorite color, select the desired color from the Site list and click the Add to Favorites button in the lower-right corner of the Assets panel. Dreamweaver displays a dialog box that informs you that the color has been added to your favorites. You need to click the Favorites radio button at the top of the Assets panel to see the favorites list. You'll work with the Assets panel to manage graphics in Lesson 5.
