Creating Server Connections

You can set up quick connections to remote servers to transfer files without going through the process of defining a site. Using a Dreamweaver site, such as the one that you initially set up in Lesson 1 and have been working with throughout this lesson, gives you access to a large number of site-management features. Server connections using FTP or Remote Development Services (RDS) do not provide access to the Dreamweaver site-management features that have been covered in this lesson.

1.

Choose Computer (Macintosh) or Desktop (Windows) from the Show menu on the Files panel. Collapse Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named your hard driveMacintosh) or My Computer (Windows) if it is open. Right-click or Ctrl-click (Macintosh single button mouse) the FTP & RDS Servers item in the Files panel list and select Add FTP Server.

The Configure Server dialog box opens.

Note

You can also access the Configure Server dialog box by choosing Site > Manage Sites, clicking the New button, and choosing FTP & RDS Server from the menu that appears.

Many of the options available here are similar to those that are available in the Remote category of the Site Definition dialog box.

2.

If you do not have access to an FTP server, you can click the Cancel button.

Because you might not have access to a remote server while you complete this lesson, the following information is presented as reference material only:

  • Description: A name or brief description of the server to which you are creating a connection.

  • Access type: You can choose FTP or RDS. FTP is most common and is the one described here. The RDS option should be selected only when you are connecting to a server that is running ColdFusion.

  • FTP host: The host name of your Web server (such as adobe.com).

  • Host directory: The directory on the remote site in which documents visible to the public are stored (also known as the site root).

  • Login: Your login name on the server.

  • Password: Your password on the server. If you deselect the Save checkbox, you are prompted for a password when you connect to the remote site.
