Saving a Frameset

When you have the number of frames you want, you need to save the frameset. The frameset file is the file that you reference when linking to this Web page. The frameset, as well as the files for each frame, needs to be saved before you can preview the page in a browser. If you attempt to preview the page in the browser prior to saving, Dreamweaver displays a message stating that the frameset and frame files all need to be saved to preview. You can save each file individually or you can save all open files at once. In this exercise, you save only the frameset.

1.

In the Document window, verify that the frameset is selected by checking the tag selector, in which the <frameset> should be highlighted.

When you create a frameset, it is automatically selected. Clicking anywhere in the Document window deselects the frameset because you would be clicking inside a frame. Clicking inside a frame is similar to clicking inside a table cell; placing the insertion point inside a cell will make that cell active, but will not give you access to the same properties that you would be able to edit if the entire table itself were selected. Likewise, to modify a frameset, you must select the frameset itself.

If the frameset is not selected, you can select it by clicking the border around the edges of the Document window. You can also select the frameset by choosing Window > Frames and then clicking the outermost border enclosing the frames in the Frames panel. The Frames panel shows you a simplified version of the structure of frames in the document.

When the frameset is selected, the Document window is outlined by a dotted line and the tag selector at the bottom of the window displays <frameset>. The document's title bar shows "UntitledFrameset-1" and the Property inspector shows the frameset properties. The number (-1, -2, and so on) of your untitled document might vary depending on how many new documents you created since you opened Dreamweaver.

Note

If the frameset is not selected, an individual frame is selected instead and the frames border around the Document window is a solid black line. If a nested frameset is selected, the border of the frame that contains it is surrounded with a dotted line.

In the Frames panel, a selected frameset is displayed with a thick border around the perimeter of the panel and the frames are displayed with a grayed-out border.

2.

Choose File > Save Frameset As and save the file as community.html in the Lesson_10_Frames/Community folder.

The document's title bar shows the filename.

3.

With the frameset still selected, type Yoga Sangha: Community for the page title. Save the frameset.

If you don't have the frameset selected when you title the page, you might be titling one of the pages that correspond with an individual framenot the actual frameset file. Refer to the Frames panel to check what is selected; it helps to ensure that you are working within the frame or frameset that you intend to edit.

Leave the community.html file open to use in the next exercise.
