Selecting a Table

Now that all the content from the second table is in the first table, you no longer need the second table. To delete it, you need to select the table first. Dreamweaver provides several methods for selecting a table. You will find that some methods are easier to use than others, depending on the complexity of the table structure.

1.

In the index.html document, select the second table by positioning the pointer anywhere inside the table and then selecting the <table> tag in the tag selector in the lower-left corner of the Document window.

Tip

You can also select a table by clicking the upper-left corner of the table or anywhere on the right or lower edge. The pointer shows a table icon next to the pointer arrow when you are close to the edge. Wait until you see the pointer before you click. Another way to select a table is to click inside the table and choose Modify > Table > Select Table. You can also click the horizontal green table width line that spans the gray bar to select the table.

Selection handles appear around the table when it is selected, and a black border surrounds the entire tablethere are no black borders around any of the individual cells.

Note

If the insertion point is inside the table and the table itself is not selected, you can see the <tr> and <td> tags in the tag selector in addition to the <table> tag. The tag <tr> represents the table row. The tag <td> represents the table data, otherwise known as a cell. Selecting a <td> tag selects the corresponding cell and enables you to make changes to that cell in the Property inspector. You'll learn more about tags in Lesson 16.

2.

With the table selected, press Delete (Macintosh) or Backspace (Windows) to remove the second table.

The second table is gone.

Tip

When the pointer is inside a cell, the keyboard shortcut Cmd+A (Macintosh) or Ctrl+A (Windows) selects the cell. Using the keyboard shortcut a second time selects the entire table.
