70 Creating a Still Frame with Frame Hold Control

#70 Creating a Still Frame with Frame Hold Control

Suppose you wanted to display rolling credits over a single frame in the video; how would you create that still frame? Well, you have two options. You can export the still frame as described in #79, or use the Frame Hold control, which is faster and simpler. Frame Hold applies to an entire clip, so it's easiest to apply when you isolate a short clip, even perhaps of a single frame, and apply the Frame Hold to that frame.

Just Like a Regular Still Image

After applying the Frame Hold, you can drag the clip to any length and apply effects or transitions, just as you would with a regular still image.

For example, Figure 70a is a frame of a pianist bowing after her performance. It's not the last frame in the video, but it's appropriate for the scrolling credits. Here's how to freeze that frame.

Figure 70a. Here's the frame we want to freeze.

1.

Zoom in to the timeline with the Zoom tool until you can see each individual frame.

2.

Move the current-time indicator to the frame on which you want to hold.

3.

Using the Razor tool, split the final frame from the rest of the clip (Figure 70b).

4.

Right-click the final frame, and choose Frame Hold. The Frame Hold Options dialog appears.

5.

In the Frame Hold Options dialog, select all the checkboxes, and choose In Point in the drop-down menu (Figure 70c).

Notes

  • Selecting Hold On creates the freeze frame; otherwise, if you stretched the clip to the right, the frames in the original clip would appear rather than the freeze frame.

  • Selecting Hold Filters keeps the filters applied at the current level; otherwise, if you had keyframed in variable settings, they might change as you dragged the clip to the right.

  • Selecting Deinterlace helps reduce flicker in the rendered clip.

6.

Click OK to close the Frame Hold Options dialog.
