20 Importing After Effects Projects into Premiere Pro with Dynamic Link

#20 Importing After Effects Projects into Premiere Pro with Dynamic Link

Adobe Dynamic Link allows you to create an After Effects composition in Premiere Pro (and Encore) or import one directly. This potentially saves a rendering generation and delays what can be a lengthy After Effects rendering cycle until you render the final project. The After Effects project can contain any After Effects filter or other content, even those not directly supported in Premiere Pro. So even if you can't paste the content and related effects from After Effects into Premiere Pro, you can bring them in via Dynamic Link.

Moreover, any changes made to the original project in After Effects automatically flow through to the imported project in Premiere Pro, saving another time-consuming rendering cycle. For serious integration between Premiere Pro and After Effects, Dynamic Link is your best option.

To open an After Effects composition in Premiere Pro, start by doing one of the following:

  • If you've already started your After Effects composition, import it by choosing File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import After Effects Composition. Premiere Pro opens the dialog box shown in Figure 20a, where you can navigate to the folder with the After Effects projects and choose the target composition.

  • Or create a new After Effects Composition by choosing File > Adobe Dynamic Link > New After Effects Composition. I like this approach because After Effects automatically chooses composition settings that match your current Premiere Pro project, minimizing error, and imports the composition into your project, saving a step.

    Making Changes in After Effects

To re-edit the composition in After Effects, select the composition, right-click, and choose Edit Original. Note that all edits made in After Effects instantly appear in Premiere Pro; you don't have to wait to save the After Effects project to preview them.

    Note

Once in the Project panel, the composition looks and acts just like any other video file. You can drag it to the Source Monitor, trim it, drag it to the timeline, and add audio and video effects (Figure 20b).
