9 Creating Subclips

#9 Creating Subclips

Subclips are sections of a longer video that you can edit separately from the original source. Here's a scenario where I'll use them.

My wife's ballet company recently performed Sleeping Beauty, and to produce the credits, I'll display a short video of each performer or group, just long enough to display their name and a twirl or two. Subclips are perfect for this task. Whenever I see short clip that's suitable for the credits, I identify it as a Subclip. Here's how it's done:

1.

Set the In and Out points in the Source Monitor as normal.

2.

Still in the Source Montor, right-click and choose Make Subclip (Figure 9a).

Figure 9a. Here are Heidi and Gary, the perfect queen and king. Making this snippet a Subclip will simplify producing the credits.

3.

In the dialog that opens, enter a name for your clip and click OK.

Premiere Pro inserts the Subclip in the Project panel, where it looks and functions just like any other clip (Figure 9b). You can trim it in the Source Monitor, drag it to the timeline, and add effects and transitions just like any other clip.

Figure 9b. Here's the Subclip in the Project panel; though the icon is different from regular video clips, Subclips act just like regular clips during editing.

Be a Neat Freak

When it comes to Premiere Pro projects, storing relevant sets of content in separate bins will save you loads of time down the road. In Figure 9b, you can see that I've got separate bins for the three major sets in the production: the Fairy Tale for the creative movement girls (two- to four-year-olds), and two sets of the ballet. Once I start collecting still-frame grabs for the DVD menu, I'll store these in a separate, appropriately named folder.
