92 Getting Started with Encore DVD

#92 Getting Started with Encore DVD

Let's do a quick flyover of the Encore DVD interface and workflow to make sure we're on the same page regarding panel names and general procedures (Figure 92a).

Import Video Files as Timelines

If you've exported one long video file from Premiere Pro to use as your primary content in Encore DVD, import it as a Timeline (File > Import As > Timeline). Encore DVD will create a timeline from the content (saving you a step) and use the file name as the name of the timeline (saving you another step). If you have multiple video files you intend to combine on a single timeline, import them as assets (File > Import As > Assets), create the timeline (right-click in the Project panel and choose New > Timeline), and drag them to that timeline.

1.

Import your content into Encore DVD by choosing File > Import As and the target content type. Navigate to and select your content and click Open.

2.

Create your menus and buttons. Options here include:

  • Import PSD menus created in Photoshop.

  • Choose a template from the Library and modify it for your use.

  • Import a still image as a menu background and add text (from the Toolbox) or buttons (from the Library).

  • Customize text properties in the Character panel.

  • Customize navigational properties (like End Action) in the Properties panel.

Link Chapter Points to Multiple Menus with Chapter Indexes

If your DVD design involves multiple chapter points accessible via sequential chapter menus, you can automate the design and linking process by using Chapter Indexes. See page 140 of the Encore DVD manual for details.

3.

Add chapter points to your content. Options here include:

  • Add chapter points in Premiere Pro (#91).

  • To add chapter points in Encore DVD, click Monitor or double-click the Timeline asset in the Project panel to preview video on the timeline. Drag the current-time indicator to the target location, right-click it, and choose Add Chapter Point.

  • If desired, customize the chapter point name and navigational properties in the Properties panel.

4.

Link buttons to content. Options here include:

  • Click and drag the chapter point to the button in the menu (Figure 92a).

  • Drag the pick whip from the button Properties panel to the target chapter point (Figure 92b).

  • Click the arrow to the right of the button link in the Properties panel, then choose the target link via menu selections.

5.

Choose File > Preview to preview the DVD. See #100 for more details.

6.

Choose File > Check Project to open the Check Project dialog box (Figure 92c). Click Start to have Encore DVD check all selected project characteristics.

Figure 92c. Encore DVD's ability to detect a range of potential errors is one of its strongest features.

7.

After resolving all issues identified in the Check Project dialog box, choose File > Build DVD and the desired option (DVD Disc, DVD Folder, DVD Image, or DVD Master). Encore DVD opens the Build DVD dialog box.

8.

Select your project options and click Build to build the project (Figure 92d).
