Easy things to do now

Lots of easy tricks improve your ability to do what you want with your handheld. Throughout this book are tips and techniques that don't take more than a minute. Chapter 1 is full of basic tips as well as references to related parts of the book. Try the basics first, and then investigate further.

Calculate a tip

Your handheld comes with a built-in calculator called Calc. It's great for figuring out tips, the price of stock trades, and how to divide your lottery winnings with your best friends

When you tap Calc on the Home screen, your screen becomes a calculator. To calculate a 20 percent tip, enter the price of the meal, tap the multiplication button, and enter .20.

Make text bigger

You'll do a lot of reading on your handheld. Make text bigger and bolder in just a few seconds in Calendar, Contacts, Memos, Note Pad, or Tasks. Changing the font in one app won't affect the others.

Lock the buttons

If you keep your handheld in a purse, briefcase, or jacket pocket, jostling can sometimes turn it on and drain the battery. To avoid accidentally turning on your handheld, set the Keylock preference to Automatic or Manual.

From the Home screen, select Prefs > Keylock. You'll find options for automatic or manual settings. Experiment to find a way that works well for you.
