SQL Server 2000 Versions

  • Design for a medium to enterprise computing environment that uses SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition.

SQL Server has different editions, and each has its own traits. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is available in six editions, as described in the following sections.

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition

Enterprise Edition is used as a production database server. This edition has all the features that are accessible in SQL Server 2000, and maintains performance and storage levels necessary to support the biggest web sites and enterprise online transaction processing (OLTP) and data warehousing systems. It is required for the use of Indexed views.

This edition is comprehensive: it includes the complete set of SQL Server database and analysis features and is uniquely characterized by several features that make it the most scalable and available edition of SQL Server 2000. It scales to the performance levels required to support large web sites, OLTP, and data warehousing. Its support for failover clustering also makes it ideal for any mission-critical line-of-business application. Additionally, this edition includes several advanced analysis features that are not included in SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition.

SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition

Standard Edition is used as a database server for a small organization or department-sized implementation. It does not include support for clustering, indexed views, distributed partitioned views, or log shipping. This is a more affordable option for small- sized and medium-sized organizations that do not require the advanced scalability, availability, performance, or analysis features of SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition. Standard Edition can be used on symmetric multiprocessing systems with up to 4 CPUs and 2GB of RAM.

Standard Edition includes the core functionality needed for non-mission-critical e-commerce, data warehousing, and line-of-business solutions. For instance, all the XML features present in Enterprise Edition are also included in Standard Edition. And although a handful of advanced OLAP features are reserved for Enterprise Edition, all data mining features and the core OLAP functionality are included in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services in Standard Edition.

SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition

Mobile consumers who spend most of their time cut off from the network but execute programs that need SQL Server data storage space use Personal Edition. It is also used for standalone programs that require local SQL Server data storage on a client computer. It cannot act as a transactional replication publisher (subscriber only).

SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition

Developer Edition is used by programmers who design applications that use SQL Server 2000 as their data storage. Although the Developer Edition maintains all the features of the Enterprise Edition that enable developers to write and test applications, the Developer Edition is licensed for use only as a development and test system, not as a production server. It can be used to create and test indexed views.

SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition is the only edition of SQL Server 2000 that gives the licensee the right to download and install SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition (SQL Server CE) from http://www.microsoft.com/sql. The Developer Edition licensee also has the right to redistribute SQL Server CE-based applications to an unlimited number of devices at no additional cost beyond the purchase price of SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.

SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition (SQL Server CE) is for use as the data store on Windows CE devices. It is capable of replicating data with any edition of SQL Server 2000 so that you can keep Windows CE data synchronized with the primary database.

The SQL Server CE engine provides an essential set of relational database features ”including an optimizing query processor and support for transactions and assorted data types ”while it maintains a compact footprint that preserves system resources. Remote data access and merge replication, which work over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and support encryption, ensure that data from enterprise SQL Server databases is reliably delivered and that this data can be manipulated offline and synchronized later to the server. This makes SQL Server CE ideal for mobile and wireless scenarios.

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Evaluation Edition

The Enterprise Evaluation Edition is a full-featured version available by a free download from the web. It is intended only for use in evaluating the features of SQL Server and stops running 120 days after it is initialized .

EXAM TIP

The Edition for the Exam This exam is based on the functionality provided by the SQL Server Enterprise Edition. In preparing for the exam, you should have this edition available for installation and testing.
