Implementing and Understanding Replication Methodologies

In putting together a complete enterprise-wide solution to data handling, the topic of replication and its pros and cons will no doubt come up. A thorough understanding of replication concepts is necessary to understand where this technology can be best implemented. Chapter 11 deals with all the concepts at length.

Replication is the process of carrying, modifying, and distributing data and database objects (stored procedures, extended properties, views, tables, user -defined functions, triggers, and indexes) from one source server to another, in a consistent fashion, independent of location. Replication can be implemented over the Internet to distribute data among diverse locations, allowing anonymous and disconnected users to access data. Replication is a huge topic. There are multiple types and an infinite number of forms any implementation can use. The following section describes just why replication is implemented.
