Native Support

OracleAS Portal has native support for two of the three components mentioned in this chapter: Oracle Reports and OracleAS Discoverer Worksheets and Workbooks. Oracle Forms does not have native support in OracleAS Portal, but we can still integrate Oracle Forms by way of a URL.

Note

You won t see the term native support in any of the OracleAS Portal documentation. In this chapter, the term native support is used to describe those features of OracleAS Portal that have been designed specifically to work with the three Oracle development tools mentioned in this chapter: Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, and Oracle Discoverer. There are OracleAS Portal “specific features explicitly designed for Oracle Reports and Oracle Discoverer, but none for Oracle Forms. Hence, OracleAS Portal is said to have native support for Oracle Reports and Oracle Discoverer, but no native support for Oracle Forms.

The Oracle Reports and Oracle Discoverer Worksheets become portlets, once we tell OracleAS Portal about them. These portlets can then be manipulated like any other portlet in the OracleAS Portal Portlet Repository and be placed on a page, be placed on a tabbed page, and/or have customization options defined for them that can be made available to power users. Since Oracle Reports and OracleAS Discoverer are supported natively in OracleAS Portal, there are certain OracleAS Portal “specific features associated with them that enhance the OracleAS Portal developer s ability to work with them. For example, developers have the ability to set up a calendar in OracleAS Portal that determines when a particular Oracle Report can be run via OracleAS Portal or when a particular printer can be accessed by that Oracle Report running via OracleAS Portal.

Just because OracleAS Portal has native support for Oracle Reports, that doesn t mean developers have to use those features. If we choose not to, however, we lose out on using any OracleAS Portal “specific functionality (like the calendars just mentioned). To integrate OracleAS Discoverer Worksheets and Workbooks, however, we will have to use OracleAS Portal “specific methods . We can also integrate Oracle Forms into OracleAS Portal, but since there is no native support, no OracleAS Portal “specific features are associated with the integration of Oracle Forms.
