How did you do on that quiz? If you didn't score as well as you would have liked , don't be disheartened. In fact, consider your low score a good thing because it means you were honest and you now know your strengths and weaknesses. Try not to be fooled into thinking that the right stuff is something you are born with, or that it's some obscure quality others have but you do not. Success starts with a dream and a plan. Listed below are some of the characteristics that many people who work from home report as helpful in their success.

Flexibility: Flexibility is essential if you have any dreams (or hopes) of working from home. Between the telephone, e- mails , front door, mail carrier, your family, and the dog, interruptions are a constant. On the other hand, situations in your business may come up that demand you take a different course or make a last-minute decision.

Multitasking: A multitasker is someone who can do many things at the same time. When you work from home, the ability to be a multitasker is key to your survival ”and your sanity . You can pick up where you left off without losing momentum or flow.

Judgment: You just can't put a price tag on good judgment, no matter how smart you think you are or how many degrees you've accumulated . Judgment means that you can look at the whole picture and sort through the details to make sound decisions. Some would call it the ability to think on your feet.

Tenacity: Business, just as life, never goes smoothly all the time. There are ups and downs , disappointments, and uncertainty. Tenacity means that you can seatbelt yourself in and ride through the tough times.

Discipline: When you work from home, whether it's as a telecommuter, a consultant, or a small business owner, there is no one looking over your shoulder making sure that you're working. You are your own boss. Procrastination can hide around every corner.

Organization: The importance of being organized cannot be overemphasized. It's so important that we have devoted a whole chapter to it in this book.
