Can You Go it Alone?

Deciding whether or not you need outside help with your children is a personal decision and one that only you can make. You know what feels comfortable, what you can juggle, and what you can afford. Although we have five children between us, we decided that we could get along without a full-time nanny or babysitter in our homes . Far from being superwomen, we could do without the help because of the kind of work we each do. Unlike a sales or marketing position that requires you to be available on the telephone, we write and edit books. While there are constant deadlines to be met, we have some flexibility in how and when we work. When the children were very young, we would do the most demanding work during naps and in the evening. When the children entered nursery school, we had mornings, nap time and evenings to work. Sound blissful? Sometimes the plan worked well, and at other times it blew up in our faces.
