The Oracle Messaging option enables users to share information and communicate with each other electronically within a workgroup and in a distributed network. This option requires the Oracle7 database to serve as the centralized repository for directory services, e-mail, calendar, and scheduling.
The Oracle Spatial Data option enables users to efficiently store, access, and analyze spatial data in an Oracle7 database. This option is available with Oracle7 Server 7.3. Examples of spatial data include data from geographic information systems (GISs), computer-aided design (CAD) systems, and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems. Therefore, data from objects ”such as road maps, printed circuit boards , and airplane engines ”can be stored and manipulated in Oracle7 Server.
The Oracle ConText option enables users to query and view text data in Oracle7 Server. Users can query text by using SQL and PL/SQL from SQL*Plus, Designer 2000, Oracle Power Objects, Oracle WebServer, Oracle Call Interface (OCI) and Pro*C, Visual Basic, and Oracle Objects for OLE. The Oracle ConText option contains two main functions: text processing and linguistic processing. Text processing enables users to query text by using logical operators, expansion operators, and proximity searches. The expansion operators can generate an expanded list of query terms based on a single word or phrase, which is supplied by the user as the search criteria. The linguistic processing function provides in-depth linguistic analysis of the English language text and produces useful output, such as themes and summaries. In addition to English, the ConText option provides text indexing and retrieval for the following languages: French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, and Japanese.
NOTE |
Document themes and summaries are abbreviated views of the contents of documents. They enable users to quickly review the key content of documents and decide which document is relevant to them. |
This section specifies the minimum hardware and software requirements for installing the Oracle7 Server software. The hardware and software requirements depend on a number of major factors, such as the size of the Oracle database system global area (SGA), the number of concurrent client connections, and the applications installed on the system. Oracle7 Server is available on more

than 80 platforms, so complete coverage of these platforms is obviously beyond the scope of this chapter. This section does cover five of the most common platforms, including Sun SPARC Solaris, HP 9000 Series HP-UX, IBM RS 6000 AIX, Windows NT, and Novell NetWare. Refer to your Oracle7 Server User's Guide or Oracle7 Server Installation Guide for detailed information on determining your system requirements. This section also provides several tips on installing and using Oracle7 Server.

TIP |
If you install Oracle7 Server 7.3.2 or 7.3.3.0 on an HP-UX machine with multiple CPUs, CPU_COUNT and LOG_SIMULTANEOUS_COPIES are not initialized to the correct number of CPUs. This problem is fixed in the Oracle7 Server Patch Set 7.3.3.1 or later for HP-UX. You can apply this patch set on your Oracle7 Server 7.3.3.0 for HP-UX. You may obtain the latest patch set from the Web by setting the URL or Web location to ftp://external-ftp/outgoing/HP9800/. |
TIP |
When you try to mount the Oracle7 Server for HP CD-ROM by following the instructions in Oracle7 Server for HP 9000 Series 700/800 Installation Guide Release 7.3.3, your session may hang. This is because the instructions for mounting the CD-ROM are different for HP-UX 10.20. The correct steps are documented in the Oracle7 Server 7.3.3 Release Notes for HP 9000 Series 700/800. You can follow these steps to mount the CD-ROM for HP 9000 Series 700/800: |
