CAUTION |
The installation process often can take several hours to complete. Always run the precheck process to be sure that the proper steps have been completed before the Designer/2000 Repository is installed. |
TIP |
Move the mouse occasionally, because the mouse icon is not updated properly from an hour glass to a normal mouse pointer after the Import utility completes its task. |
Remember that the process might take some time to complete, based on how quickly your server can process information. Don't be alarmed if the process seems to have locked up your computer; give the process at least six to seven hours to complete before concluding that the computer has locked. Before rebooting the client, contact your DBA to ask whether any activity is being performed on the server. If activity is detected , do not reboot ”things still are running.
After the installation processes complete, Designer/2000 is ready to use.
The installation process is a somewhat lengthy process. If at all possible, you might want to schedule the installation for a weekend . Also, don't forget to have complete backups of both the client and server data before you install Designer/2000.
In this chapter, you have seen the importance of examining the workflow of your database
system and the way in which Designer/2000 makes this analysis easier. You have also seen that Designer/2000 is a useful tool for correcting any system design flaws either in an existing
system or as you set up a new schema.

This chapter also shows you the basics of the installation process for whichever platform or installation type you choose. With Designer/2000 installed and a good understanding of design methodology, you should be ready to move on to the more detailed design options shown in the following three chapters.
