System Requirements

For Designer/2000 to execute properly, certain minimum system requirements must be met. This section explains the minimum system requirements for the client and server side of Designer/2000 Version 1.3.2. Remember that these are only the minimum requirements. Often, when manufacturers state the minimum requirements, they state the base minimum necessary for the product to function. Even though the product can function using the minimum requirements, it is recommended to use additional resources when available.

Client

The minimum requirements for the client side of your installation follow:

NOTE
These requirements are the minimum to operate on a Windows 3.1 system. However, you should increase these requirements for Windows 95 or Windows NT for optimal performance. For example, a Pentium processor at 133-200MHz with 32MB RAM or more will improve your speed and performance and allow for additional installation options.
  • An IBM PC or 100 percent compatible, with at least 486/25 processing power
  • A CD-ROM drive that can be assigned to a logical drive letter ”often, drive D or E
  • Available disk space of 350MB if all options are installed, 300MB for a typical installation; also, at least 40MB of swap space (use a permanent swap file when you allocate this space)
  • A hefty 16MB of RAM available, with a recommendation of 32MB of RAM
NOTE
You should acquire as much RAM as possible; try to match or better the 32MB recommendation. Adding additional RAM, especially above the 16MB minimum, gives you the most increase in performance possible with Designer/2000 (with the exception of installing a faster processor).
  • At least 400KB of conventional RAM (memory below 640KB) available before starting Windows
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher in Enhanced mode (again, Windows 95 or NT is recommended)

Page 744

  • MS-DOS 5.0 or later
  • SQL*Net 1.1 or 2.0 for Windows, both of which are supplied on the Designer/2000 CD-ROM; if you are planning to use SQL*Plus, it must be Version 3.1.3.5.5 or 3.1.3.7.2C

Server

The minimum requirements for the server side of the installation follow:

  • Oracle7 Server, with the Procedural option installed; ask your Oracle database administrator (DBA) whether all Procedural option packages have been installed on the server
  • A minimum of 35MB in the system tablespace for the Repository PL/SQL packages, procedures, and views of Designer/2000
NOTE
Remember that 35MB is the minimum for the system tablespace. In actuality, if sufficient disk space is available, allocate at least 65MB of additional space to the system tablespace. Also, try to make sure that the available system tablespace is fairly contiguous.
NOTE
If you plan to use the legacy-driven approach to ISs with the reverse-engineering tools, you must configure Oracle server with Distributed options.

Back Up, Back Up, Back Up

Although Designer/2000 has been tested thoroughly by Oracle, as well as numerous current users of Designer/2000, you always should protect your current system by performing a complete backup of your machine. During the installation process, entries are made to your WIN.INI file. The installation process might include coordination with your DBA to ensure that all data on Oracle Server also has been backed up. If any problems occur after the installation, you will be able to return your system to its original state before the installation if you backed it up.

Upgrading to Designer/2000

The way in which you begin to install Designer/2000 depends on which Oracle CASE product you have installed on your client. The following scenarios will help you determine which steps to perform to upgrade to Designer/2000.

Page 745

Oracle CASE 5.1

In this case, a functional Oracle CASE 5.1 resides on the client PC. To upgrade to Designer/2000, remove CASE 5.1 from the client PC, and move on to the "Client Installation" section. On the server side, you need to upgrade the Repository.

Designer/2000 6.0.0 to 6.0.4

In this scenario, an earlier version of Designer/2000 resides on the client. To upgrade to the current release of Designer/2000, uninstall the old version and proceed to the "Client Installation" section. On the server side, you need to upgrade the Server Repository.

Designer/2000 6.0.5 to 6.06

In this scenario, although a previous version of Designer/2000 exists on the client, you do not have to uninstall it before upgrading to the latest release of Designer/2000. Proceed to the "Client Installation" section, during which you will overwrite your current version of Designer/2000. On the server side, you need to upgrade the Server Repository.

Client Installation

To install the client side of Designer/2000, you use a Windows-based product developed by Oracle called Oracle Installer. This installation program is located on the CD-ROM and performs the following steps during the installation of Designer/2000:

  1. The Oracle home directory (usually, ORAWIN95 or ORANT) and appropriate subdirectories are created.
  2. Installation-specific files are copied to the appropriate subdirectory.
  3. A Designer/2000 program group is created.
  4. Selected components of Designer/2000 are installed.
  5. Designer/2000, online documentation, and appropriate icons within the Designer/2000 program group are installed.

Before you start the Oracle installation, make sure that no other Windows tasks are running.

CAUTION
When you make sure that no other Windows tasks currently are running, you also should disable all screen savers and incoming/outgoing fax-management software, because the installation process can be a time-consuming process that should not be interrupted after it is initiated.

Page 746

When Windows is running, insert the CD-ROM into the available CD-ROM drive.

NOTE
In the following examples, x refers to the drive letter associated with your CD-ROM drive. This often is drive D or E. Substitute the proper drive letter whenever you encounter x.

With the CD-ROM properly inserted into the CD-ROM drive, start the installation process by choosing File Run from Windows Program Manager. When prompted to enter the command line to execute, enter the following:

 x:\install\orainst.exe

Alternatively, you can use Windows File Manager to view the contents of the CD-ROM and execute the program.

Now complete the following steps to install the Designer/2000 client portion:

  1. After the installation program loads into memory and performs a few initialization steps, the first screen of Oracle Installer appears. This window enables you to select the language to be used during the installation process.
  2. Next, you are prompted for some license information and the Oracle home directory. Enter the name of your company, and move to the Oracle home directory field. Change the value displayed or accept the default, which for an NT installation is C:\ORANT.
TIP
Take a minute to jot down the Oracle home directory path , because it is a very important piece of information. This location is where all information concerning Designer/2000 and all subsequent Oracle products are installed.
  1. If the Oracle home directory is not part of your PATH statement, Oracle automatically sets up your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include the Oracle home path. Unless you intend on changing the path yourself, there is no reason not to let Oracle add the home directory to your PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
NOTE
If you choose OK, you need to reboot your computer before the changes will take effect.
