7.3 SOURCES FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

There are many books available that entirely cover the firewall technologies that are available today. As a matter of fact, most books that have addressed Internet and intranet security in the past are actually books on firewalls [3, 5, 6], or put the main emphasis on firewalls [7]. There are also many research papers and reports that address specific topics related to firewalls. You may refer to the proceedings of any conference or workshop related to network security. As part of the Computer Operations, Audit, and Security Technology (COAST) project at Purdue University, Eugene H. Spafford has also collected many resources related to Internet firewalls.[5]

In addition, there is the Firewalls Mailing List that is archived at several sites (e.g., http://lists.gnac.net/firewalls/). Communications in the mailing list is summarized in a FAQ document addressing various aspects of Internet firewalls. The document was maintained by Marcus J. Ranum until 1998 and is now being maintained by Matt Curtin. It is available in either HTML, PostScript, and PDF formats from the URL mentioned above as well as several other sites.

If you are interested in building a Linux-based firewall, you may refer to Mark Grennan's Firewall and Proxy Server HOWTO document.[6]

Finally, a more or less comprehensive list of firewall products is available at http://www.thegild.com/firewall/. You may also refer to the Web sites of the various firewall vendors to get a more comprehensive and accurate picture about the current trends in firewall technologies.
