Appendix -- Active Directory Resources

Appendix

Active Directory Resources

The following compilation lists resources that provide information about programming with Active Directory and related topics. These resources are available on http://www.microsoft.com and other Internet sites.

Internet addresses change often. If you experience any difficulty finding the information presented in this appendix, go to the root site (for example, http://www.microsoft.com) and try searching for the information. Also, the links to third-party sites are not under the control of Microsoft, and Microsoft is not responsible for the contents of or changes to these sites.

http://msdn.microsoft.com

MSDN, the Microsoft Developers Network. This site is an invaluable resource with a tremendous amount of information on Microsoft technology. Regular columns written by the developers of the technology provide unique insight. The entire MSDN Library is available online, including the complete Active Directory, Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI), and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) documentation set. A number of articles are devoted to Active Directory and ADSI, including a chat transcript with the ADSI development team. This is my favorite jumping-off point for anything to do with Microsoft technologies.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/

MSDN Online Downloads. Some of the C++ code samples for this book require header and library files from the Microsoft Platform SDK. The files that you need should be included on the companion CD, but if you are missing files, you should check this link to download the appropriate components from the Platform SDK.

http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/

Microsoft Knowledge Base. This is the first place to go when you are having a problem. You can research the problem and the fixes for it that are documented in Knowledge Base articles. And here's a tip: When searching the Knowledge Base, use the advanced features to find information quickly. For example, to get a list of articles related to Active Directory bugs or fixes, use a Boolean search and type bug OR fix AND "Active Directory"

http://www.microsoft.com/adsi/

The semiofficial Microsoft page for ADSI. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, the page was not actively maintained and is somewhat outdated.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/news/bulletins/adextension.asp

Active Directory Client Extensions. This page hosts the latest Active Directory Clients for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Although these components are included on the companion CD, newer versions will be available on this site when they are released.

news://msnews.microsoft.com/

Microsoft newsgroups cover many topics, including Active Directory and ADSI. These "peer-to-peer" newsgroups are useful for learning about the problems other users have and for finding common solutions. The newsgroups are currently not staffed or monitored by Microsoft support engineers. Here's a list of relevant newsgroup addresses that you can access with Outlook Express or another newsgroup viewer:

The Microsoft Windows 2000 home page. From this page, you can reach a number of resources, including much of the Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server resource kits, which I consider invaluable for developers and administrators alike. The Download, Support, and Technical Library sections are also excellent.
